We would love to know more about you! Who you are and where you're from? When did you start street photography?

My name is Linda True, and I currently live in San Francisco. Street photography was something I just slid into after carrying a compact camera with me all the time from traveling and wanting to capture memories with friends. Having lived in multiple place, I feel like a perpetual tourist.

What inspired you to become a street photographer?

I saw beauty in overlooked things, common place things, and fleeting moments. I wanted to capture them. I see images vividly, and I don’t have the technical ability to capture it in realistic painting or drawing. And there is this one moment from the early 2000s that still lives in my memory. I was walking down the streets in Washington DC.  There were three people power walking right in front of me into a restaurant. Two men in black suits with a women in a red dress and pumps in between them - their legs all in sync. The patterns, the emotion, the movement, the gloss on their shoes and the sheen on her stockings live rent free in my head in a 2x3 ratio. I have another moment of a dapper man in yellow in the middle of a cross walk while his daschund is squatting surrounded by oncoming traffic in NYC from two years ago. You could say it’s the regret of not capturing moments that will haunt me that drive me.

How would you describe your work in terms of style and/or approach?

I have two styles of photography. Dreamy, colorful, and whimsical versus stark black and white. All my work usually conveys joy, wonder, or peace. Rarely do I explore more heavier emotions, but those that do stand out in my memory.

What is your photography routine like? Do you photograph every day?

I have no routine.   I really don’t like routine. I don’t photograph when I am in a mindless routine. I tend to capture moments nearly every day, but sometimes it will be a couple of weeks until I stumble upon something I want to capture.

What camera or mobile device do you use for photography? Do you shoot digitally, on film, or a mix of both?

I shoot digitally on whatever I have on hand. That often means it’s my iPhone or Pixel. I recently started carrying a Ricoh GR III to return to my compact camera roots. I found that I wasn’t carrying my Canon and Sony DSLRs as much as I liked, even though I love using specialty lenses.

What challenges do you face when photographing on the street?

People are so much more aware of when a camera phone is pointed at them. So, I started asking for direct portraits even though I prefer candid moments.

Do you ever wonder what happens to the people in your photos?

I do hope that sad person in the panda suit sitting on the sidewalk found a better headspace.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception people have about street photography?

None that I am aware of.

What are your favourite elements to capture in a street photograph? (light, colour, composition, human interaction, etc.)

The overall feel. Hopefully a positive one.

What is your take on social media influence on street photography?

I appreciate social media’s ability for more people to see my work, and for me to see other’s work.   There is incredible talent out there.

Are your prints available for purchase? If so, where can art buyers and collectors contact you to purchase them?

What advice would you give to aspiring photographers?

Just take photos. Don’t listen to the naysayers inside or outside your head. Everyone sees the world differently.

A huge thank you to Linda True for sharing her incredible journey.
